EPCC Hosted TSCPA High
School Educator Symposium
On Thursday, March 6, 2003, the Texas
Society of Certified Public Accountants (TSCPA) conducted a high
school educator symposium at EPCC. The event was held in the Board
Room at the Administrative Service Center. This was one of three
symposia being held across the state in the spring of 2003. The other
two were held at Texas Christian University in Forth Worth, and at The
University of Texas at San Antonio.
The intent of the educator symposium was
to provide high school teachers with resources for the classroom and
to promote TSCPA as a resource for Texas educators. Classroom
resources include the information package, or iPACK, which features
the 15-minute "Takin' Care of Business" video, career guides,
education handbook, and poster. Presenting these materials to the
teachers and explaining to them how they can incorporate it into their
existing curriculum was a major portion of the symposium.
Members for the El Paso Chapter of the
TSCPA took part in a question and answer forum providing insight into
the accounting profession. The members who participated were Robert
Diaz, Nino Gonzalez, Becky Hancock, Bob Hanson, and Eric Payne.
About 40 business, accounting, math,
marketing, I/S and economics educators from West Texas, not just El
Paso, attended the symposium. Evaluations from the event were very
positive.
El Conquistador,
El Paso Times, and Channel 26 provided newspaper and television
coverage for the event.
Fabiola Rubio, EPCC Vice President
of Resource Management, provided the opening remarks at the
symposium. Lee Cannell, Dean of the Valle Verde Campus, provided
information about the Accounting and Occupational Education Programs
at the college.
The Valle Verde Institutional,
Recruitment, Retention, and Graduate Committee (IRRG), and Nino
Gonzalez, Accounting Instructor, did the coordinating for this event.
Chapter Meeting Gives
Members Opportunity
To Meet Joe Wardy, Candidate for Mayor
Members who attended the March 25th
Chapter meeting were afforded a great opportunity to get to know
mayoral candidate, Joe Wardy. Originally, Mayor Caballero and Jaime
Perez were to have been on hand for the question and answer session
moderated by Dr. Gregory Rocha of UTEP, but because of circumstances
beyond their control, Mayor Caballero and Mr. Perez had to cancel at
the last minute.
Mr. Wardy opened the meeting with a few
introductory remarks, and then accepted questions from our members.
Dr. Rocha also proceeded to ask him a number of questions from a
prepared list whereby some of the differences between Mr. Wardy and
Mayor Caballero were highlighted. A special, "Thanks," goes out to
Dr. Rocha for once again assisting the Chapter with getting to know
the mayoral candidates.
